Course overview

The BSc Business Computer Systems is a one-year full-time top-up honours degree programme which builds on students’ existing FdSc, HND or IADCS (or equivalent) qualifications. The course prepares students for careers in systems design, database development or ecommerce.  Graduates may also progress to postgraduate study. Students have an integrated pattern of study including advanced database design and development, e-commerce and e-business together with a project to provide a portfolio of up-to-date computing skills appropriate to the modern business environment.

As a one-year top-up degree programme, applicants are required to have a qualification equivalent to level 5, such as an FdSc or HND in a relevant subject, or IADCS; applicants are also required to have a minimum of GCSE English Language and Mathematics at grade C or above (or equivalent international qualification).

A variety of methods are in use, and each is specified in the appropriate module specification and handbook. Methods of assessment include:

  • Case study focussed reports
  • Research reports
  • Presentations
  • Software development and testing
  • Unseen examinations
  • Part-seen examinations (e.g. with seen case study)

After the successful completion of the course you would be able to:

  • demonstrate an awareness of key legal, social, ethical and professional issues pertinent to information systems, and their use in the business environment
  • select and applying appropriate problem-solving strategies in the context of information systems and information technolog
  • identify, specify, analyse and evaluate business problems within a business information systems environment
  • demonstrate professional skills in a work-related context (including e.g. presentations, report-writing, ability to work as part of a team)
  • understand the needs of business users, and plan, design, develop and implement a software solution to meet their requirements
