Dr Ying Liu, Lecturer in Business Studies at LSST Elephant & Castle, has edited a newly published scholarly volume examining the role of social practice in the development of business communication.

Published by IGI Global Scientific Publishing, Business Communication Training Through Social Practice: Approaches and Case Studies brings together an international group of contributors from China, India and the UK. The collection addresses how communication is learned, not only as a formal skill, but as a situated and socially embedded practice.

The volume is organised around a series of thematic and case-based studies which explore how communication competencies are developed through experiential and participatory forms of learning. Across its chapters, Dr Liu and his team consider how such approaches shape learners’ ability to interpret context, negotiate meaning and communicate effectively within diverse working environments. In doing so, it offers both conceptual frameworks and applied models for educators seeking to rethink how communication is taught in business and management programmes.

Dr Ying Liu, Lecturer in Business Studies at LSST Elephant & Castle, said: “Many books explain how to communicate. This book focuses on how communication is learned through participation in social practice. Its contributions reflect a shared recognition that communication cannot be fully understood outside of the contexts in which it is enacted. By bringing together perspectives from different educational and cultural settings, the book explores how socially grounded approaches can support more meaningful and transferable learning.”

Mr Ali Jafar Zaidi, LSST’s CEO, said: “This publication is a carefully developed contribution to an area of increasing importance in higher education. It addresses, with profound clarity and depth, the question of how institutions can support the development of communication capabilities that are responsive to complex and globalised environments.”

Mr Syed Rizvi, Dean of Learning and Teaching and Academic Dean of LSST Elephant & Castle and LSST Stratford, said:

“What emerges from this volume is a consistent emphasis on participation – on learning through doing, through interaction, through engagement with overall context. That emphasis has significant implications for teaching delivery and how we understand the development of professional capability.”

Eniana Gobuzi, Associate Dean, LSST Elephant & Castle, said: “The excellent book offers a thoughtful account of communication as a human and relational process. Its focus on context, culture and experience reflects the realities of contemporary learning environments and contributes to a broader conversation about the purpose and practice of higher education.”

The publication is part of a growing body of work from LSST academics that examines how socially engaged and practice-based approaches can inform teaching, learning, and assessment in higher education.
