Ambition met opportunity at LSST Elephant and Castle when Business student Marcus Odonkor secured a life-changing role with CIS Security directly from the campus’s Careers Fair — an achievement now inspiring students across LSST.

At first, Marcus expected to leave LSST’s Careers Fair with only advice and a handful of leaflets. Instead, he walked out with renewed confidence, a clear sense of direction and a job offer that would redefine his future.

“Firstly, I would like to thank The Most High and everyone at LSST Elephant and Castle for making this opportunity possible for me,” said Marcus. “It has propelled my confidence and purpose in life. At LSST’s career fair, I gained important insight into actual job options and a better understanding of the variety of roles available in the security industry by meeting employers from CIS Security.”

He added, “LSST’s career fair gave me access to opportunities I was unaware of. I felt like my goals were more attainable after speaking with employers in person. I was reminded that the first step to success is networking.”

In the weeks before the event, Marcus had been supported closely by Alessandro Rizzo, LSST’s Regional Careers & Employability Officer, who took time to understand his ambitions. Through patient guidance, they jointly refined his CV, rehearsed interview questions and rebuilt the confidence that Marcus felt had diminished during a period of long-term unemployment.

So when Marcus stepped into the fair, he did so with professional readiness. His conversation with CIS Security began as a routine introduction but quickly evolved into a meaningful exchange about responsibility, calm leadership, and the values underpinning frontline security work. Marcus recognised these qualities within himself – qualities strengthened through his belief that others had placed in him.

That conversation became the catalyst. Within weeks, Marcus was formally offered the role of Operational Response Officer at CIS Security – his first major step into the professional world.

Marcus reflected on his journey with characteristic humility: “Humble yourself and flourish, while riding the waves of life.”

Marcus did more than secure employment – he rebuilt his confidence and reframed his understanding of his own potential. His success exemplifies what LSST’s Careers and Employability Service strives to achieve: transforming barriers into breakthroughs while guiding students from career uncertainty to empowerment.

Marcus’s Career Fair Tips for Students

  1. Prepare thoroughly. Polish your CV with LSST’s Career and Employability Service, research employers, and practise your answers. Preparation builds confidence and makes every conversation count.
  2. Just show up. You don’t need all the answers before attending a careers fair — being present is the first step toward opportunity.
  3. Be honest and genuine. Share your strengths, ambitions, and even challenges. Employers respond to authenticity.
  4. Learn from every interaction. Not every conversation needs to lead to a job but each teaches you something valuable about yourself and the workplace.
  5. Believe in your potential. Setbacks don’t define you. With determination, confidence, and openness, you can turn one opportunity into a life-changing moment.

This year’s LSST Elephant & Castle Careers Fairs were exceptional in scale and impact. Across two major events, over 3,000 live vacancies were presented by 24 leading employers, including Barclays UK, the Metropolitan Police, the Department for Work and Pensions, and CIS Security. Dozens of students secured interviews on the day, with many progressing to the next stages of recruitment.

“Every handshake, every question, every connection at these fairs carries power,” said Alessandro Rizzo, LSST’s Regional Careers & Employability Officer. “Marcus’ success represents what we strive for – tangible transformation. He arrived with enthusiasm and left with an opportunity. His achievement is proof that LSST’s employability initiatives are not just effective – they are life-changing.”

Eniana Gobozi, Associate Dean at LSST Elephant & Castle, praised Marcus’s perseverance:

“Marcus’s journey reflects everything we champion at LSST. We are immensely proud of him and of all students who step forward to shape their own futures. His story shows that success begins with showing up and believing in yourself.”
