Dr Yasmin Mirza, a Module Leader and Lecturer in Health at LSST Elephant and Castle (London), has cemented her position as a leading figure in global health research. Her participation at the 5th International Conference on Infection Prevention and Control and the 4th International Conference on Microbiology and Immunology, held at the Renaissance London Hotel on 11–12 November 2024, has propelled LSST onto the world stage in infection prevention and antimicrobial resistance research.

Dr Mirza’s pioneering presentation unveiled innovative strategies to combat Malassezia infections – a fungal organism prevalent on human scalps and associated with numerous dermatological conditions. Her ground-breaking study explored the co-production of potent antimicrobial compounds. This promising discovery presents viable alternatives to conventional antifungal therapies, offering new hope in addressing the growing threat of antifungal resistance.

Speaking about her ongoing research, Dr Mirza said: “Mycoses or fungal infections pose a serious threat to human health, causing a wide range of infections. They affect more than one billion people globally, of whom around 150 million suffer from severe infections. But unlike antibacterial compounds, for the last 25 years, there has been approval of less than one authorised substance per year for application in human health. There is a need to research novel antifungal compounds to provide an alternative treatment that has target specificity and reduced side effects.”
