Dr Dhaneswar Bhoi, a Lecturer in Social Psychology at LSST Elephant & Castle (London), has been awarded the British Sociological Association’s (BSA) prestigious Research Event Grant for his groundbreaking research at LSST. This recognition highlights LSST’s growing research credentials and commitment to addressing vital societal issues such as diversity and inclusion.

Dr Bhoi, as the grant recipient, described the award as a pivotal opportunity to advance crucial discussions within higher education. He shared his thoughts on receiving the award from the BSA: “I’m honoured to receive the Research Event Grant from the BSA. This grant represents more than just financial support, it’s an endorsement of LSST’s dedication to building inclusive academic communities.”

“I’m deeply grateful to the BSA and excited to bring together emerging scholars to tackle these critical themes. This accomplishment builds on my work at the University of Edinburgh, focusing on equity, inclusion and mental health. Securing funding to promote equity in education has always been a goal and this grant offers an invaluable chance to further explore these topics. I’m thankful to the entire LSST team for their unwavering support throughout my academic journey which has made this success possible.”

The workshop, titled “Diversity and Inclusion in Higher Education,” aims to unite early-career researchers in a collaborative forum to share, critique and disseminate their work.

Securing the BSA to host a research event where early career researchers can present their completed work on diversity and inclusion in Higher Education is a noteworthy achievement. This event gives emerging scholars a valuable opportunity to showcase their research in a vital higher education area. The research grant supporting this initiative marks an important first step in building a strong foundation for future academic involvement and research inquiry. It also positions LSST to attract larger research grants as time progresses that further boost its research capabilities.

“We are confident that Dr Bhoi’s workshop will ignite meaningful conversations and inspire actionable change,” said Mr Ali Jafar Zaidi, LSST’s Deputy CEO. “It’s about creating a space where our researchers can connect, collaborate and contribute to a more inclusive future for academia.”

A Milestone for LSST

The BSA’s £1,000 grant is a vital step in ensuring the workshop’s success, covering essential costs and enabling greater accessibility for participants.  This achievement is not just an individual triumph but a collective victory for LSST’s Research Centre. Securing this funding reflects the institution’s broader mission to champion academic excellence and address pressing global issues.

“We are thrilled to see this kind of recognition for our academic community,” said Syed Rizvi, Academic Dean of LSST Elephant and Castle and Stratford campuses and Dean of Learning & Teaching. “It validates the hard work and impact our researchers bring to the table. This workshop aligns perfectly with LSST’s ethos of innovation and inclusivity in higher education.”

“The forthcoming workshop will serve as an invaluable platform for emerging scholars to engage in meaningful intellectual exchange, further enriching the academic landscape. We take immense pride in Dr Bhoi’s accomplishments and remain steadfast in our support of LSST research initiatives that drive progressive and inclusive change within higher education,” added Eniana Gobuzi, Associate Dean of LSST Elephant and Castle.

This event is scheduled tentatively for late June or early July 2025 and further announcements will be made on LSST’s social media.
