Academics from LSST Luton have published new research explaining how public funding can be used to attract private investment into eco-friendly UK projects.

The study explores the practical mechanics of green finance (the practice of directing investments, loans and financial services towards environmentally friendly projects and net-zero initiatives). By examining how government backing builds confidence among private investors, the research offers practical solutions to help close the UK’s climate investment gap.

Mr Aqeel Syed, Dean at LSST Luton, said: “I congratulate our academics on this remarkable research milestone. Their findings address a pressing national issue by demonstrating how to effectively bridge the UK’s green investment gap. This level of scholarship directly enhances our student experience, ensuring our teaching is informed by leading contemporary research.”

Major environmental and green infrastructure projects in the UK often struggle to secure early funding because private lenders view them as high-risk. The peer-reviewed paper – titled “Public and Private Capital’s Role in Advancing Green Finance Investment: Evidence from a Structural–Behavioural Model of Capital Mobilisation in the UK” and published in the Journal of Scientific Research and Reports – breaks down how to overcome this hurdle through de-risking green investments and investor psychology.

Adding to this success, the authors’ related research paper – “Public Support and Green Investment Commitment: The Mediating Roles of Investor Confidence and Private Capital Mobilisation in the UK” – was officially accepted for presentation at the 2026 International Conference on Business, Economics, and Management (ICBEM) at Chihlee University of Technology in Taiwan.

Aparajita Guria, Business Teaching Fellow & Module Leader, LSST Luton, said: “Unlocking sustainable finance is one of the biggest economic challenges of our generation. Our goal was to build a practical model that shows how policy decisions influence real-world money flows. Bringing these exact findings into our lectures at LSST Luton allows our students to study modern markets through a genuine and practical lens.”

Noor Mukhtar, Lecturer in Business, LSST Luton, added: “Green finance is no longer a niche elective – it is central to modern business strategy. Publishing this work shows our students at LSST Luton that their learning is backed by current and active research. We hope it inspires them to question, analyse and lead with sustainability in mind when they enter the workplace.”

To maximise the real-world impact of their published work, the authors will be leading a series of specialised interactive LSST workshops tailored for both students and professionals.

The research was spearheaded by lead author Dr Mahua Biswas, alongside co-authors Noor Mukhtar and Ms Aparajita Guria. While Dr Biswas has since moved on from LSST, her co-authors warmly acknowledge her vital leadership and vision in initiating this project.
