Today is University Mental Health Day, an annual opportunity to raise awareness of the mental health challenges faced by students and staff across the higher education sector. To venerate the day, LSST is launching its mental health champions initiative to help students feel more comfortable about discussing mental health issues.

‘The initiative, managed by our Student Engagement Team and the Student Union, aims to raise awareness between students and staff about mental health challenges and the impact this can have on student engagement and achievement,’ said Dr Wendy Wigley, LSST’s Head of Student Enhancement and Life-cycle. ‘Student volunteers from each campus will soon receive Mental Health Awareness training from our Engagement Team. Once fully trained, these student volunteers then become Mental Health Champions.’

‘We all cope differently with mental health so we are here for anyone who needs someone,’ said Stephanie Pena Garcia, LSST’s Student Engagement & Mental Health Wellbeing Officer. ‘In times of uncertainty and stress, the Covid-19 pandemic is normalising conversations about mental health and wellbeing amid so much isolation, anxiety and loneliness felt by students during what should be the happiest time of their lives.’

‘The Student Union and the Student Engagement Team have successfully worked together to implement LSST’s PACT model as well as several support strategies that have created a notable and positive impact on the student community,’ asserted Irina Barariu, LSST’s Student Union President. ‘However, I look forward to working with Dr Wigley’s team to ensure that there is even more meaningful student mental health support at LSST.’
